Glossary of Canine Terms - B

Balance - Each portion of the dog in balanced relationship with each other and in harmony with the whole.
Barrel - Rounded rib section
Bat Ear - Erect, broad at base, rounded at tip, with orifice to the front.
Beefy - Fleshy and solid, brawny, of heavy build, thickset. Often used when hindquarters are heavy.
Belton - Name given to Blue and Lemon flecking on Setters.
Bitchy - A feminine looking male dog
Bite - The relative position of the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed
Blaze - White mark running up the middle of the muzzle and / or skull.
Blenheim - Rich chestnut marking on pearly white ground.
Bloom - The sheen on a coat.
Bone - A well boned dog is one with limbs giving the appearance of, and feel of, strength and spring without coarseness.
Breeching - Hair on the inside and rear of upper thigh, often tan colour.
Brindle - Mixture of light and dark hairs, usually bars of darker hairs with a grey or brown main colour.
Brisket - The lower part of the body, (in frontof the chest) and between the forelegs. Often referred to as the keel.
Broken up Face - Receding nose, deep stop, wrinkled. e.g. Bulldog.
Brush - A tail heavy with hair, bushy like that of a fox, seen in Collies.
Burr - The hair inside the ear orifice.
Butterfly Nose - Mottled with skin colour amongst the black.
Button ear - One that drops over in front, e.g. Fox Terrier.
